Sediment and Isotope Geology - Sediment und Isotopengeologie

The main research topic of our department is the sedimentary archive from the Precambrian to the Holocene. A specific focus is on the geochemistry and petrography of carbonates.

The department’s research covers a wide range of topics including palaeoclimatology (marine and continental), the sedimentary archive of epicontinental and marine basins, sediment petrography and diagenesis and applied sedimentology with focus on geothermal reservoirs. Biogenic, abiogenic and induced carbonates are assessed as archives of a dynamic environment. Examples range from experimental approaches to marine and diagenetic carbonate geochemistry and petrology but also continental archives such as speleothems. An important topic is the calibration and application of non-conventional isotope system such including calcium and magnesium. At present (and limited by the global pandemic) we work in Germany, Italy, the Emirates, New Zealand, China, The Bahamas and Spain.
