Erdbebenprozesse

Die Gruppe "Erdbebenprozesse" verwendet Beobachtungsansätze aus der Seismologie, geologische Strukturmerkmale und Modellierungsansätze. Sie untersucht die Ursachen für die Entstehung von Erdbeben, die Vorgänge beim Bruch von Verwerfungen und die Faktoren, die die Zerstörungskraft von Erdbeben beeinflussen.

Sie befasst sich mit Fragen wie: Sind Erdbeben ähnlicher Größe in verschiedenen Verwerfungsbereichen physikalisch gesehen gleich? Wie beeinflusst die Stärke der Verwerfung, wann und wo Erdbeben auftreten? Welche Rolle spielen Flüssigkeiten in der Erdkruste bei der Entstehung von Erdbeben und der Bruchgeschwindigkeit von Verwerfungen? In welchem Verhältnis stehen kleinere, häufigere Erdbeben zu größeren, weniger häufigen und zerstörerischeren? Wie lösen die seismischen Wellen von Tausende von Kilometern entfernten Erdbeben lokale Erdbeben aus? Unterscheiden sich durch Flüssigkeitsinjektion ausgelöste Erdbeben physikalisch von ihren tektonischen Gegenstücken?
