Natural conditions currently hinder the successful exploitation of geothermal energy in European low-temperature rock formations, even if this energy production is most environmental friendly, CO2-neutral, and continuously available. Geotechnical engineering to overcome these barriers, such as fracking, is emotionally discussed and has no legal acceptance. We want to develop an environmental friendly striking new technology to TRL 4 to enhance geothermal energy exploitation at low cost.

This project aims at a mathematical description of heat transfer in fractures including microscopic fracture surface morphology. Temperature affects fluid properties, and mechanical stress, which again depends on temperature and fluid pressure, affects the fracture surface morphology. Therefore, a suitable heat transfer model needs to incorporate hydraulic and mechanical processes, resulting in a fully coupled thermo-hydraulic-mechanical model. Recent laboratory experiments permit a study of these processes in an accuracy unknown up until now and enable an in-depth comparison with theoretical and numerical models.

ProjektSchifferRAG

ProjektSriLanka

Sri Lanka has several hot springs which are yet to be characterized in detail. In the current project, we use an integrated approach applying hydrogeophysical, hydrogeological and numerical methods to characterize the hot springs in Sri Lanka. Two test sites are studied in detail to estimate heat source temperatures, locations, heat generating mechanisms and heat flow rates, which are vital for future geothermal exploitation in Sri Lanka.

Despite having the capacity of providing reliable base load electricity, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on imported fossil fuels, geothermal energy remains unexploited in Argentina. The goal of this project is to numerically model groundwater processes and obtain petrophysical data through laboratory techniques for the Pismanta Geothermal System. The combination of these results with a 3D geological model will determine with great precision the main characteristics of the hydrothermal field. Extrapolating these results to other systems of similar characteristics will add to a more accurate estimation of the energy stored in the Central Andes of Argentina.

ProjektTuan

This project is performed on an area of abandoned coal mines in the coal-bearing Upper Carboniferous formations that crop out around the lower Ruhr river area, Germany. Currently, these mine waters drain directly to the Ruhr river and its tributaries, through water discharge adits with high mineralization. The project mainly focuses on the hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical characteristics of mine waters from abandoned coal mines with a relationship between environmental geochemistry, hydrogeology, isotope hydrology, and water resources management. This project also contributes to the understanding of the characteristics of mine water and problems related to mine water quality in the entire study area.

ProjektEthiopia

Landslides and ground failures are among the common geo-environmental hazards in many of the tectonically active hilly and mountainous terrains of Ethiopia, such as in Debre Sina. This landslide is one of the largest that occurred in recent times on the East African continent. Prediction of future landslide occurrence requires an understanding of the conditions and processes controlling landslides. The main goal of this project is to understand the controlling parameters of deep-seated landslides, the processes leading to the triggering of a landslide, and the failure mechanisms

ProjektMexico

The project aims to detect As, F and U at microscale in the mineralogical and amorphous assemblage of the volcanic rocks and basin fill sediments of the Sierra Madre Occidental, Mexico. The detection of those elements is key to understand the mechanisms that control the mobilization of these elements in the groundwater system.

ProjektSchifferHR

This project aims at understanding the water hydraulics during flooding of abandoned mines as well as the in flooded mines. Research in archives of historical documents allows the reconstruction of flooding events of long-time abandoned mines and using hydraulic modelling reproduction of flooding of mines in the past can be studied. Using the SchachtKam, water movement inside shafts can be studied in detail.

INTCATCH will instigate a paradigm shift in the monitoring and management of surface water quality that is fit for global waters in the period 2020-2050. INTCATCH will do this by developing efficient, user-friendly water monitoring strategies and systems based on innovative technologies that will provide real time data for important parameters, moving towards SMART Rivers. The business model will transform water governance by facilitating sustainable water quality management by community groups and NGOs using a clouds data linked to a decision support system and eco-innovative technologies.

This project has receive funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 689341
